130 years, and still going

Celebrating togetherness since 1891

O.P. Anderson has always been the bottle with the bright red cap that just belongs on the table at celebrations like Easter, Midsummer, the annual crayfish party and Christmas. At graduation lunches and birthday celebrations – all the way to royal weddings.

As such, the warming sensation and flavor of aquavit are not only those of caraway, aniseed and fennel – but of decades of tradition, celebration and communal occasions. A taste of spring, summer, fall and winter. Of Swedishness and togetherness.

But for something to become a fine old tradition, it has to start as a fine new tradition. And that’s what we’ve consistently been doing for generations and generations, all the way back to 1891. Inviting people to share our old traditions – and letting them take us along into new ones.

Dedicated to quality since 1891

A history made of labor and passion

In 1891, Carl August Anderson launched O.P. Anderson – an aquavit named after his father Olof Petter. With bold but balanced flavors, it quickly established itself as a Swedish tradition and rose to the top of sold aquavits. All through the years, the recipe stayed the same. But aspirations of quality and craftsmanship in the manufacturing kept rising.

O.P. Anderson not only survived two world wars, the resolution of one union and the formation of another, a government monopoly – and not to forget, the prohibition – but flourished as a constant expression of Swedishness.

If Carl August, or even his dad, was around today, we would proudly tell him that all his hard work has definitely not been forgotten – and the future of aquavit looks brighter today than it has in a hundred years.

The spirit of ancestral heritage

The original Swedish aquavit

Traditions like drinking aquavit – that have been around all the way since the 17th century – seem to be quite resilient as the world changes around them. After all, joyful things tend to stick around.

But aquavit wasn’t just consumed for the pleasurable buzz. People loved extracting what nature provided and concentrating it into something that does the body good. Caraway, aniseed and fennel – the three major spice components of O.P. Anderson – have been used to remedy anything from coughs to upset tummies for literally thousands of years.

As such, O.P. Anderson made – and still makes – perfect sense for anything digestion-related. In preparation of a meal, in accompaniment of the meal as well as after the meal.

But, far more than that, whenever we loudly and repeatedly proclaim “Skål!” on these occasions, we raise our glasses and meet the gaze of everyone around the table individually – to express how grateful we are to be in each other’s company.

Traditional craftmanship and state-of-the art facilities

Inside the O.P. Andersson distillery

In 2008, the distillery in the northern Swedish town of Sundsvall where O.P. Anderson had been distilled since the 1920s was put to rest. Luckily in 2017, O.P. Anderson was finally brought back home to a brand-new distillery.

Today, the new distillery in Sundsvall houses state-of-the-art equipment living side by-side with shining copper stills and ancient oak barrels. A facility not only set up for producing the tried and tested, but also creating and developing products like never before.

There, every organic spice is distilled with careful consideration. This is the true craftsmanship behind complex spirits. Not only blending the product together but carefully creating every single component used in that blend – as well as understanding how they will mature together through the oak wood contact during the ageing process. Creating the assertive yet balanced flavor that you can enjoy year after year requires an incredible amount of precision, skill, knowledge and experience – as well as the noses and palates of masters.

All of that is what you’ll find in a bottle of O.P. Anderson – 130 years of hard work, and six months of oak.

An irreplaceable human touch

The men behind the cask

Jonas Odland, our Aquavit Master Blender, has developed a wide variety of aquavit variations, limited editions and anniversary blends over the decades.

Among all, the original O.P. Anderson will however always remain the flagship brand and product he feels truly responsible for. To carry on its tradition and heritage, and to help it soar to new heights.

If Jonas is the soul and spirit of O.P. Anderson, Distillery Manager Stefan Mårtensson is the heart. The never tiring force making sure the water of life – Aquavit – keeps circulating through and around our Swedish traditions.

O.P. Anderson is not just for sharing, but created from unique human connections. An essence that simply can’t be fully industrialized or written down.
